Ruth Roman was born on June 22, 1939 at Lynn Massachusetts. Ruth Roman was the first child born to Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold & Abraham Roman. Her father, a carnival barker, passed away as a young girl, requiring her mother to provide for the family by being waitress or cleaning lady. Ruth was a student and grew up in poverty within Boston Massachusetts in the tenement district. Following only two school years, Ruth left to pursue an acting profession. It was not without difficulties. After landing a gig at New York as a model for a detective magazine she found it difficult to find jobs on stage. Her next job was as an "hat check" girl for a nightclub but she quit and moved back to Boston. She made the ends meet by working as an usherette during the day while working at night with the New England Repertory Company, her first steady acting job. She graduated with a certificate in drama at Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
